Partioning from within OS X should leave your data in tact if done correctly, but if not, you risk wiping everything. **WARNING** - you should probably backup the entire drive first - just in case. I don’t want to have to reboot each time I want to try something out with a Windows app on my Mac.
Then, I'd go into your Windows VM and see if you can format that parition as NTFS. Parallels 13 Home For Mac Nested Virtualization I read through your splendid tutorial on installing Windows XP with Apple’s Boot Camp product (see boot camp help) but that’s not for me. If it were me, I'd partiton the external drive on the Mac side first and create a second partition that is FAT32 (since there's no option to make it NTFS in OS X). Over the years Parallels has evolved its feature set to make running Windows apps on your Mac as seamless as possible - you can set up your VM in Coherence mode for example where the Windows desktop is hidden away and your applications run directly from your Mac desktop in their own window, with key Windows tools such as the Start menu accessible from the menu bar. I'm guessing you could parition the drive so that part of it was dedicated specifically for the Mac side (OS X journaled) and create a second parition on the drive from within OS X and then format it from within Windows as NTFS. If the drive is formatted completely as "OS X Journaled" (HFS) I'd be suprised if the Windows VM could write to it at all.
